16th IAS Annual Conference 10-11th October 2012 The title of this year’s conference is “Learning to Listen: A Suicide Prevention Conference". This year’s conference will take place over 2 days at the Mount Wolseley Hotel, Tullow, Co Carlow. Day one (10th Oct) will begin at 2pm with a research masterclass, where a number of new researchers will present their work to 4 Research Masters for feedback. The conference will start at 9.15am on the morning of the 11th October. Prof. Lars Mehlum of the National Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention in Norway and Dr. Heather Fiske are our 2 international speakers. Prof Mehlum will be giving an overview of results from a recent study of suicidal and self-harming adolescents and Dr Fiske will be exploring different aspects of the use of language in the field of suicide prevention and mental health. An Irish panel of speakers will also be present, Dr. Tony Bates, Headstrong, John Saunders, Shine and Harriet Parsons of Bodywhys and they will discuss the current issues of stigma and the still hidden issues relating to mental health currently in Ireland. There will be three workshops on the afternoon of the 11th october exploring the theme of listening and language including the 'Human Library' a SeeChange innovation first debuted at the Volvo Ocean race celebrations in Galway this year, a session on mindfullness hosted by Headstrong and an opportunity to learn more about eating disorders with Bodywhys at a workshop entitled 'Eating Disorders: What helps and what hinders' CPD Irish College of Psychiatry - 5 points ICGP - pending IACP - Certificates of attendeance will be available Registration Full conference program can be found here Registration for the conference is €75 ( €60 IAS members) Further booking information can be found here
