14th Annual Conference 5th of October 2010

The IAS 14th Annual Conference will take place on 5th of October 2010 in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Sligo. The theme for this year's conference is Deliberate Self Harm.

There will be an address at the event by President of Ireland, MAry McAleese, Patron of the IAS.

The Michael Kelleher Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Keith Hawton, Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Centre for Suicide Research atOxford University.

Other speaker include:

Rory O'Connor, Professor of Psychology at the University of Stirling and Special Professor, University of Nottingham

Dr Ella Arensman, Director ofResearch, NAtional Suicide Research Foundation, Cork.

Dr Paul Moran, Psychiatrist, Cluain Mhuire, St. John of Gods, Dublin

Congratulations Teresa and well done!

Teresa Williams run the Dublin City Marathon on Monday 26th October in aid of the Irish Association of Suicidology and other nominated charities. From fundraising for this event Teresa has donated €2,000 to the IAS.

Updated Media Guidelines for Reporting
Suicide & Self-harm

The Irish Association of Suicidology and Samaritans updated media guidelines for reporting  suicide and self-harm were relaunched on Thursday 1st October, In the Dunraven Arms Hotel, Adare, Co. Limerick by

Irish Association of Suicidology has partnered with the Samaritans to launch a new version of their media guidelines. These guidelines help journalists with the sensitivities of reporting suicide and self-harm incidents.

New move to tackle effects of recession on suicide rates

A NATIONAL programme is being launched by the HSE in an effort to offset the potential impact of the recession on suicide rates.

Entitled Looking after your mental health in tough economic times, the programme involves the rollout of pocket-sized information cards and leaflets bearing the contact details of support agencies. It was launched by the HSE’s National Office for Suicide Prevention (NOSP) in conjunction with a conference which took place at Dublin Castle on 29th July.   (click her to download the rest of this article)







Guidelines on reporting of suicide breached

MEDIA COVERAGE of the Monageer inquiry report earlier this year showed “significant breaches” of reporting guidelines on suicide, a forum hosted by the Health Service Executive (HSE) heard yesterday.

With the publication last May of the Monageer inquiry report into the deaths of Adrian Dunne, his partner Ciara O’Brien and their two children in Wexford two years earlier, journalists covering the findings were asked to adhere to guidelines produced by the Irish Association of Suicidology and the Samaritans. 

However, Geoff Day, director of the HSE’s National Office of Suicide Prevention, said a study of 58 newspaper articles on the report showed “significant breaches” of the guidelines.

Launch of new Forum on www.sosadireland.ie

SOSAD Ireland recently launched its new forum, where visitors and members can

openly discuss all aspects of suicide and ask the questions that may be concerning them. The aim of this forum is to show the extent of suicide in Ireland and help people understand that there are other options and that there is help and support available to anyone at risk.
